Great to finally see a pack of Kiyaker's going down the bremer river on the weekend. Have not seen much acitivity over the years in the bremer, glad someone finally got the nerve to dip their toes in it.
Anyone know if they got sick?
Mostly seemed to be adults.... it would be good to see more of this, may even go down to read a book in a off chance of seeing some other people risking it. Hehe, anymore of that, the council will have to put in a kayak launching spot of in Woodend. _________________ Ipswich under 50% pop employed. Avg = $29,460 pa.

I remember risking the bremer in 3 canoe's, we put in at one mile went down the bremer and up the brisbane to the weir past collages, it was interesting seeing the good and the bad from the river, and met some interesting people. Well worth the experience, no one got sick even capsised 2 canoes and had a fish jump into a canoe. |

| never thought the water would be deep enough to actually keep the kayaks from running aground...sorry ..sticking in the mud...many years ago the bremer was much cleaner and i recall the entire river covered in hyacinth...it was so thick that some guy tried to walk across the water on a large pair of home made snow shoes...the story is in an old copy of the QT..if you doubt the tale....probably around 1974.... |

I am sure they would get sick. Has anyone else noticed the 5 shopping trolley's in the middle of the river? You can see them at low tide, the handles stick out, you can sometimes see half of a fully exposed shopping trolley. That is how deep the Bremer is.
Imagine if they actually dredged the river from the centre of town, to rosewood... the amount of water it would hold would be massive. The south-east region would have enough fresh water for a few hundred years.
There is more water in the river at Harriseville than that of Ipswich, where they have the weir..... good fishing too. _________________ Ipswich under 50% pop employed. Avg = $29,460 pa.

i have posted this in two topics this one and North Ipswich Wetlands
i think the QLD government and ICC need to pull there finger out of there "beep" and clean up the river up and not just one part the hole river. look at the brisbane river they have been cleaning that up for years. in some parts of the brisbane river you and swim in it. ICC is basing the second stage of the riverheart project around the river what river clean it PLZ. _________________ http://www.vibe-ent.com

I don't remember any weir on the Bremer, and collages is a part of the Brisbane River.
A long time ago I travelled up and down the Bremer in a motor dinghy, there is some beautiful scenery along there, very historical. The mouth of the bremer, near the junction, was actually dredged. You can see where the dredging stopped.
The quality of fish, plant life, water quality is improved a lot when you hit the Brisbane River. There are regatta's on the Brisbane River, swimming carnivals, fishing tournaments, water taxi's, party boats, in fact if you life near a river you own a property that is worth lots of money.
It's the other way around for Ipswich.
The Bremer is a load of rubbish, and that is exactly why they dredge the rivers. All the crap from land debris is washed into the river. If the Brisbane river was not dredged into the river it is now, it would be exactly like the Bremer.
The Bremer is totally unusuable for anything, and it always will be until they do dredge it. The Bremer is actually getting less and less water in it every year, it is filling up with silt.
Go and hang your head over a few bridges in the area. Compared to the 80's the base of the river is rising and another 10 years there will be no water going past Brassall, unless it really flooded.
Floods clean the crap out of rivers, and we haven't had a flood for a very very long time. So all the crap that sits on the base of our rivers, is still there broken down and has made the river inhabitiable for lots of activities that we use to enjoy when we were kids, it was muddy back then but people swam in it, unlike today.
Today the water under the David Trumpy bridge is 4 foot deep at low tide, and probably around 6 foot deep at high tide. Go there at low tide and have a look at all the shopping trolley's in the water.
Its like that majority of the way down the river, its shallow, useless and will be until they dredge it.
Dredging is not bad, its the human resolve of flooding (which we don't have any more).
The new developments in Ipswich will look great, they will need to clean out the river before they can make it look pretty.
Pretty soon dredging won't be an option. _________________ Ipswich under 50% pop employed. Avg = $29,460 pa.
